✧ I set up my snares at al-Abwa', and a gazelle fell into one of them but escaped. I went out after it and found a man who had taken it. We disputed over it and raced to the Messenger of God ﷺ. We found him encamped at al-Abwa' under a tree shading himself with a leather cloth. We brought our dispute to him, and he ruled that it be divided between us in two halves. I said: O Messenger of God, we come upon camels that have milk and are restrained, while we are in need. He said: Call out to the owner of the camels three times. If he comes, then leave it; otherwise, untie their udder straps, then drink, then tie them again, and leave some milk for the suckling. I said: O Messenger of God, stray animals come to us; is there reward for us if we water them? He said: Yes, in every living being with a thirsty liver there is reward. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ began to tell us, saying: A time will come upon people when the best wealth will be sheep between the two mosques, eating trees and coming to water. Their owner will eat from their produce, drink from their milk, and wear from their wool — or he said: their hair — while tribulations will churn among the masses of the Arabs. By God, you will not care, the Messenger of God ﷺ said it three times. I said: O Messenger of God, advise me. He said: Establish prayer, give zakah, fast Ramadan, perform Hajj to the House, perform 'umrah, be dutiful to your parents, maintain family ties, honor the guest, enjoin good, forbid evil, and move with the truth wherever it moves.
