✧ When he sent out a raiding party or an army, he would enjoin its commander to fear Allah regarding himself and enjoin him to treat the Muslims with him well. Then he would say: 'Fight in the name of Allah; fight those who disbelieve in Allah. Do not steal from the spoils, do not act treacherously, do not mutilate, and do not kill a child. When you meet your enemy from the polytheists, call them to Islam. If they accept Islam, accept from them and refrain from them. Then call them to move from their land to the land of the Muslims. If they do so, accept from them; otherwise, inform them that they are like the Bedouin Muslims: the judgment of Allah that applies to the Muslims applies to them, and they have no share in the fay' or the spoils. If they refuse that, call them to pay the jizyah. If they do so, accept from them and refrain from them. If you besiege a fortress or a city, and they ask you to grant them the judgment of Allah, do not grant them that, for you do not know what the judgment of Allah is. Instead, grant them your own judgment, then judge among them as you see fit. If you besiege a castle, do not grant them the protection of Allah or the protection of His Messenger; rather, grant them your own protection and the protection of your fathers, for it is less serious for you to violate your own protection and the protection of your fathers.'
