✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called him and said: 'It has reached me that Ibn Sufyan b. Nubayh al-Hudhali has gathered people against me to raid me, and he is at Nakhlah or Uranah. Go to him.' He said: I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, describe him to me so I may recognize him.' He said: 'The sign between you and him is that when you see him, you will feel a shuddering.' He said: I went out with my sword slung over my shoulder until I came upon him among women in howdahs, seeking a place for them, at the time of Asr. When I saw him, I felt what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had described to me of shuddering. I approached him, but I feared that there might be an encounter between me and him that would distract me from prayer. So I prayed while walking toward him, gesturing with my head. When I reached him, he said: 'Who is the man?' I said: 'A man from the Arabs who heard of you and your gathering against this man, and he came for that.' He said: 'Yes, I am indeed in that.' He said: I walked with him a little until I could, then I attacked him with the sword and killed him. Then I left, leaving his women bowed over him. When I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he saw me and said: 'The face has succeeded.' He said: I said: 'I killed him, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'You have spoken the truth.' He said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood with me, took me into his house, and gave me a staff, saying: 'Keep this staff with you, O Abdullah b. Unays.' He said: I went out with it to the people. They said: 'What is this staff?' I said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave it to me and ordered me to keep it.' They said: 'Will you not go back and ask him why?' He said: I went back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, why did you give me this staff?' He said: 'It is a sign between me and you on the Day of Resurrection. The fewest people on that day will be those who carry staffs'—or: 'who lean on staffs.' So Abdullah tied it to his sword, and it remained with him until he died. Then he ordered that it be placed with him in his shroud, and they were buried together.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me, Abu Qatadah, an ally of theirs from the Ansar, and Abdullah b. Atik to Ibn Abi al-Huqayq to kill him. We went out and came to Khaybar at night. We tracked their doors and locked them from outside. Then we gathered the keys and threw them up. The people climbed into the palm trees, and I and Abdullah b. Atik entered the stairway of Abu al-Huqayq. Abdullah b. Atik spoke, and Ibn Abi al-Huqayq said: 'May your mother lose you, Abdullah, how did you get to this town? Get up and open, for a noble man does not turn away from his door at this hour.' She got up, and I said to Abdullah b. Atik: 'You take care of it.' He drew his sword upon them. His wife went to cry out, and I drew upon her, but I remembered the saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he forbade killing women and children, so I held back. Abdullah b. Unays said: I entered upon him in an upper room of his. I stood looking at the intense whiteness of his body in the darkness of the room. When he saw me, he took a pillow and covered himself with it. I went to raise my sword to strike him but could not because of the shortness of the room. So I stabbed him, then I went out. My companion said: 'Did you do it?' I said: 'Yes.' He entered and stood over him. Then we went out and descended the stairway. Abdullah b. Atik fell on the stairs and said: 'Oh my leg, it is broken.' I said to him: 'Your leg is fine.' I put down my bow and carried him. Abdullah was short and slight. I brought him down, and his leg was fine. We went on until we caught up with our companions. The woman cried out: 'A night attack!' The people of Khaybar stirred. Then I remembered the place of my bow in the stairway, and I said: 'By Allah, I will go back and get my bow.' My companions said: 'The people of Khaybar have stirred; you will be killed.' I said: 'I will not go back until I get my bow.' So I went back, and the people of Khaybar had stirred, and they had nothing to say except: 'Who killed Ibn Abi al-Huqayq?' I made sure not to look at any person's face, nor anyone look at my face, except that I said as they said: 'Who killed Ibn Abi al-Huqayq?' Until I came to the stairway, climbed up with the people, took my bow, then caught up with my companions. We traveled by night and hid by day. When we hid by day, we appointed a watchman to look out for us. When we approached Madinah and were at al-Bayda, I was their watchman. Then I signaled to them with my garment, and they came down and went out at a fast pace. I came down after them and caught up with them until we reached Madinah. My companions said to me: 'Did you see anything?' I said: 'No, but I saw the exhaustion that had overtaken you, and I wanted the alarm to carry you.' Then we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was addressing the people. He said ﷺ: 'The faces have succeeded.' We said: 'May your face succeed, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Did you kill him?' We said: 'Yes.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for the sword with which he was killed and said: 'This is his food in the edge of the sword.'
