✧ Banu Sa'd b. Bakr sent Dimam b. Tha'labah to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He came to him, made his camel kneel at the door of the mosque, then hobbled it, then entered the mosque while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting among his companions. Dimam was a tough man with shaggy hair and two locks. He stood before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Which of you is the son of Abd al-Muttalib? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib.” He said: Muhammad? He said: “Yes.” He said: O son of Abd al-Muttalib, I will ask you and be stern in questioning, so do not feel anger in yourself against me. He said: “I will not feel anger in myself, so ask whatever appears to you.” He said: I adjure you by Allah, your God and the God of those before you and the God of those who will be after you—did Allah send you to us as a messenger? He said: “O Allah, yes.” He said: Then I adjure you by Allah, your God and the God of those before you and the God of those who will be after you—did Allah command you that we worship Him alone, associating nothing with Him, and that we cast off these rivals which our fathers used to worship besides Him? He said: “O Allah, yes.” He said: Then I adjure you by Allah, your God and the God of those before you and the God of those who will be after you—did Allah command you that we pray these five prayers? He said: “O Allah, yes.” He said: Then he began mentioning the obligations of Islam one by one—zakah, fasting, Hajj, and all the rites of Islam—adjuring him at each obligation as he had adjured him for the one before it. When he finished, he said: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, and I will perform these obligations and avoid what you have forbidden me. Then he said: I will not add nor detract. Then he turned to his camel, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said when he turned away: “If the one with the two locks is truthful, he will enter Paradise.” He went to his camel, released its hobble, then left until he came to his people. They gathered around him, and the first thing he said was: Evil be to al-Lat and al-Uzza! They said: Stop, O Dimam! Beware of leprosy, beware of madness, beware of elephantiasis. He said: Woe to you! By Allah, they neither harm nor benefit. Allah has sent a Messenger and revealed to him a Book by which He has rescued you from what you were in. And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. I have come to you from him with what he has commanded you and forbidden you. By Allah, by the evening of that day there was not a man or woman in his settlement except as a Muslim. Ibn Abbas said: We have not heard of a delegate of a people better than Dimam b. Tha'labah.
