✧ The Blame for Seeking Knowledge for Other than Allah

أَخْبَرَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ حَدَّثَنَا حَرِيزٌ عَنْ سَلْمَانَ بْنِ سُمَيْرٍ عَنْ كَثِيرِ بْنِ مُرَّةَ قَالَ

«لَا تُحَدِّثِ الْبَاطِلَ الْحُكَمَاءَ فَيَمْقُتُوكَ وَلَا تُحَدِّثِ الْحِكْمَةَ لِلسُّفَهَاءِ فَيُكَذِّبُوكَ وَلَا تَمْنَعِ الْعِلْمَ أَهْلَهُ فَتَأْثَمَ وَلَا تَضَعْهُ فِي غَيْرِ أَهْلِهِ فَتُجَهَّلَ إِنَّ عَلَيْكَ فِي عِلْمِكَ حَقًّا كَمَا أَنَّ عَلَيْكَ فِي مَالِكَ حَقًّا»

Translation

Chain of narrators

  3. Ḥarīz
  4. Salmān b. Sumayr
  5. Kathīr b. Murrah

✧ Do not tell falsehood to the wise, lest they hate you. Do not tell wisdom to the foolish, lest they deny you. Do not withhold knowledge from its people, lest you sin. Do not place it with other than its people, lest you be considered ignorant. Indeed, you have a duty regarding your knowledge just as you have a duty regarding your wealth.
