✧ The Blame for Seeking Knowledge for Other than Allah

أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ عَنْ هِشَامٍ صَاحِبِ الدَّسْتَوَائِيِّ قَالَ
قَرَأْتُ فِي كِتَابٍ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّهُ مِنْ كَلَامِ عِيسَى عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ تَعْمَلُونَ لِلدُّنْيَا وَأَنْتُمْ تُرْزَقُونَ فِيهَا بِغَيْرِ عَمَلٍ وَلَا تَعْمَلُونَ لِلْآخِرَةِ وَأَنْتُمْ لَا تُرْزَقُونَ فِيهَا إِلَّا بِالْعَمَلِ ويلَّكمْ عُلَمَاءَ السَّوْءِ الْأَجْرَ تَأْخُذُونَ وَالْعَمَلَ تُضَيِّعُونَ يُوشِكُ رَبُّ الْعَمَلِ أَنْ يَطْلُبَ عَمَلَهُ وَتُوشِكُونَ أَنْ تَخْرُجُوا مِنَ الدُّنْيَا الْعَرِيضَةِ إِلَى ظُلْمَةِ الْقَبْرِ وَضِيقِهِ اللَّهُ ينهاكمْ عَنِ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا أَمَرَكُمْ بِالصَّلَاةِ وَالصِّيَامِ كَيْفَ يَكُونُ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ مَنْ سَخِطَ رِزْقَهُ وَاحْتَقَرَ مَنْزِلَتَهُ وَقَدْ عَلِمَ أَنَّ ذَلِكَ مِنْ عِلْمِ اللَّهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ؟ كَيْفَ يَكُونُ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ مَنِ اتَّهَمَ اللَّهَ فِيمَا قَضَى لَهُ فَلَيْسَ يَرْضَى شَيْئًا أَصَابَهُ؟ كَيْفَ يَكُونُ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ مَنْ دُنْيَاهُ آثَرُ عِنْدَهُ مِنْ آخِرَتِهِ وَهُوَ فِي الدُّنْيَا أَفْضَلُ رَغْبَةً؟ كَيْفَ يَكُونُ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ مَنْ مَصِيرُهُ إِلَى آخِرَتِهِ وَهُوَ مُقْبِلٌ عَلَى دُنْيَاهُ وَمَا يَضُرُّهُ أَشْهَى إِلَيْهِ أَوْ قَالَ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْهِ مِمَّا يَنْفَعُهُ؟ كَيْفَ يَكُونُ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ مَنْ يَطْلُبُ الْكَلَامَ لِيُخْبِرَ بِهِ وَلَا يَطْلُبُهُ لِيَعْمَلَ بِهِ؟

✧ I read in a book that I was told was from the words of ‘Isa ﷺ: You work for this world while you are provided for in it without working; and you do not work for the Hereafter while you are not provided for in it except by working. Woe to you, evil scholars! You take the wage and you neglect the deed. Soon the Lord of the deed will seek His deed, and soon you will depart from the wide world into the darkness and narrowness of the grave. Allah forbids you from sins just as He commanded you to pray and fast. How can one be among the people of knowledge when he resents his provision and disdains his station, while he knows that that is from Allah’s knowledge and power? How can one be among the people of knowledge when he suspects Allah in what He has decreed for him and is not pleased with anything that befalls him? How can one be among the people of knowledge when his world is more favored by him than his Hereafter, and he is more desirous of this world? How can one be among the people of knowledge when his destination is his Hereafter, yet he is turning toward his world and what harms him is more desirable to him – or he said: more beloved to him – than what benefits him? How can one be among the people of knowledge when he seeks speech to report it and does not seek it to act upon it?
