✧ The Blame for Seeking Knowledge for Other than Allah

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عُبَيْدٍ الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ سَلَّامٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْمَاعِيلَ هُوَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ الْمُؤَدِّبُ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ الْأَحْوَلِ عَنْ مَنْ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ

مَنْ طَلَبَ الْعِلْمَ لِأَرْبَعٍ دَخَلَ النَّارَ أَوْ نَحْوَ هَذِهِ الْكَلِمَةِ لِيُبَاهِيَ بِهِ الْعُلَمَاءَ أَوْ لِيُمَارِيَ بِهِ السُّفَهَاءَ أَوْ لِيَصْرِفَ بِهِ وُجُوهَ النَّاسِ إِلَيْهِ أَوْ لِيَأْخُذَ بِهِ مِنَ الْأُمَرَاءِ

✧ Whoever seeks knowledge for four things will enter the Fire – or words to that effect: to vie with the scholars thereby, to argue with the foolish thereby, to turn people’s faces toward him thereby, or to receive something from the rulers thereby.
