Virtue of Knowledge and the Scholar

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عِمْرَانَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَمَانٍ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَجْلَانَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ

«فَضْلُ الْعَالِمِ عَلَى الْمُجْتَهِدِ مِائَةُ دَرَجَةٍ مَا بَيْنَ الدَّرَجَتَيْنِ خَمْسُ مِائَةِ سَنَةٍ حُضْرُ الْفَرَسِ الْمُضَمَّرِ السَّرِيعِ»

Translation

Chain of narrators
  1. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿImrān
  2. Yaḥyá b. Yamān
  3. Muḥammad b. ʿAjlān
  4. al-Zuhrī

✧ The superiority of the scholar over the devoted worshipper is one hundred degrees, between each two degrees a distance of five hundred years of the running of a swift, lean horse.
