machine translationThe ḥadīth of Jarhad is from Ibn Jarhad, who is unknown (majhūl), and from unknown persons, and it is broken in its chain (munqaṭiʿ).
in مسند الدارمي, p. 2688 - Ibn al-Qaṭṭān
machine translationThe ḥadīth of Jarhad has two defects. One is idṭirāb (disturbance), which leads to loss of confidence in it. That is because they disagree about it: some say Zurʿah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, some say Zurʿah b. ʿAbdullāh, and some say Zurʿah b. Muslim. Then among these, some say "from his father, from the Prophet ﷺ", some say "from his father, from Jarhad, from the Prophet ﷺ", and some say "Zurʿah, from the family of Jarhad, from Jarhad, from the Prophet ﷺ". He said: Although I do not consider idṭirāb in the chain to be a defect in itself, that is only when the one around whom the ḥadīth revolves is trustworthy (thiqah); in that case the narrators' disagreement about him, whether mursal or musnad, raised (marfūʿ) or stopped (mawqūf), connected or cut, does not harm him. But when the one about whom the ḥadīth is disturbed is not trustworthy or not known, then the idṭirāb weakens it or increases its weakness. Such is the state of this report. The second defect is that Zurʿah and his father are of unknown condition and not famous in narration.
