✧ Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ wrote to him: 'If something comes to you that is in the Book of Allah, judge by it and do not let men divert you from it. If there comes to you what is not in the Book of Allah, look to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and judge by it. If there comes to you what is not in the Book of Allah and there is no Sunnah from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in it, look to what the people have agreed upon and take it. If there comes to you what is not in the Book of Allah and is not in the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and no one before you has spoken about it, then choose whichever of the two matters you wish: if you wish to exercise ijtihad with your opinion and then proceed, proceed; and if you wish to delay, then delay, and I do not consider delay except better for you.'
