✧ Mu'awiya heard the muezzin say: "Allah is most great, Allah is most great," so Mu'awiya said: "Allah is most great, Allah is most great." The muezzin said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah," so Mu'awiya said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah," then "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah." The muezzin said: "I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," so Mu'awiya said: "I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." The muezzin said: "Hasten to prayer, hasten to prayer," so Mu'awiya said: "There is no might and no power except with Allah." The muezzin said: "Hasten to success, hasten to success," so Mu'awiya said: "There is no might and no power except with Allah." The muezzin said: "Allah is most great, Allah is most great, there is no god but Allah," so Mu'awiya said: "Allah is most great, Allah is most great, there is no god but Allah." Then he said: "Thus did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

حديث معاوية في هذا الباب مضطرب الألفاظ وأظن أبا داود إنما تركه لذلك وكذلك البخاري

machine translationThe hadith of Muʿāwiyah in this chapter is inconsistent in its wording (muḍṭarib al-alfāẓ), and I think that Abū Dāwūd left it out for this reason, and likewise al-Bukhārī.
