✧ The Jews, when a woman among them menstruated, would not eat with her or drink with her, and they would turn her out of the house, and she would not be with them in the houses. The Prophet ﷺ was asked about that, and Allah, the Exalted, sent down: {They ask you about menstruation. Say: It is harm} [al-Baqarah 222]. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded them to eat with them, and to drink with them, and to have them with them in the houses, and to do everything except intercourse. The Jews said, “This man does not want to leave anything of our affair except that he opposes us in it.” Then ʿAbbād b. Bishr and Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him of that, and said, “O Messenger of Allah, should we not have intercourse with them during menstruation?” The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed greatly, so much so that we thought he was angry with them. They stood up and left, and a gift of milk met them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent after them and brought them back and gave them to drink, so we knew that he was not angry with them.
