Their eyes [were overcome], and they slept until the sun had risen. The first of them to wake from his sleep was Abū Bakr ؓ. No one used to wake the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from his sleep until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ woke by himself. Then ʿUmar ؓ woke, and he sat by his head and began to say "Allāhu akbar" and raise his voice until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ woke. When he woke and saw that the sun had risen, he said: "Move on." So he travelled a little, until the sun had turned bright, then he dismounted and prayed with us. A man from the people withdrew and did not pray with us. When he finished, he said: "O so-and-so, what prevented you from praying with us?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am in a state of major impurity (janābah)." So he commanded him to perform tayammum with clean earth, then he prayed. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ hurried me ahead of him with a group of riders to look for water, for we were extremely thirsty. While we were travelling, we came upon a woman letting her legs hang down between two water-skins. We said to her: "Where is the water?" She said: "Far off, far off! There is no water." We said: "How far is it between your family and the water?" She said: "A day and a night." We said: "Go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." She said: "What is the Messenger of Allah?" We gave her no say in her affair until we brought her before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She told him the same as she had told us, except that she told him that she was the mother of orphans. He said: So he ordered her two water-skins [brought], and he spat a mouthful into the two mouths of the skins. Forty thirsty men drank until we were satisfied, and we filled every water-skin and container we had, and washed our companion, except that we did not give water to a camel. And the skins were nearly bursting with water. Then he said to us: "Bring what you have." So he gathered for her pieces of bread and dates until he tied up a bundle for her. He said: "Go and feed your children, and know that we have not taken anything from your water." When she came to her people, she said: "I have met either the greatest sorcerer of the people, or he is a prophet as they claim." So Allah guided that group of people through that woman, and she accepted Islam and they accepted Islam. Al-Bukhārī recorded it from Abū al-Walīd with this chain of transmission, and Muslim recorded it from Aḥmad b. Saʿīd al-Dārimī, from Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥanafī, from Salm b. Zurayr.
