✧ He appointed a freed slave of his called Hani' over the protected pasture. He said to him, "O Hani', fold your wing away from the Muslims, and beware of the supplication of the oppressed, for it is answered. Allow in the owner of the small herd and the small flock. But keep away from me the camels of Ibn 'Affan and Ibn 'Awf, for if their livestock perish, they will return to farming and palm trees, whereas the owner of the small herd and the small flock, if his livestock perishes, will come to me with his children and say, 'O Commander of the Faithful, shall I leave them? No, by your father.' Water and pasture are easier for me than dinars and dirhams. By Allah, they think that we have wronged them. It is their land for which they fought in the pre-Islamic era and upon which they embraced Islam. By the One in whose hand is my soul, were it not for the wealth that I carry in the cause of Allah, I would not have protected a single span of their land from the people."
