A Jewish man and a Jewish woman who had committed adultery were brought. He said to the Jews, "What prevents you from carrying out the legal punishment (ḥadd) on them?" They said, "We used to do it when that power was among us, but when our kingdom was gone, we no longer dare to do it." He said to them, "Bring me the two most knowledgeable men among you." So they brought him the two sons of Ṣūriyā. He said to them, "You are the most knowledgeable of those behind you?" They said, "They say so." He said, "Then I adjure you by God, who revealed the Torah to Moses: how do you find their punishment in the Torah?" They said, "A man with a woman is fornication and carries a punishment, and a man on the belly of a woman is fornication and carries a punishment. But if four testify that they saw him put it into her as the kohl-stick enters the kohl-container, he is stoned." He said, "Bring me the witnesses." Four testified, so the Prophet ﷺ stoned them both. Mujālid alone narrated it from al-Shaʿbī, and he is not strong.
