Abū al-Ṣahbāʾ came to Ibn ʿAbbās, and Ibn ʿAbbās said to him: "Bring forth some of your little reports, from your memory and from what you have gathered." Abū al-Ṣahbāʾ said to him: "Do you know that three (divorces) used to be reduced to one in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" Ibn ʿAbbās said: "Yes. Three used to be reduced to one in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and of Abū Bakr, and in the early part of the caliphate of ʿUmar. Then when ʿUmar's time came, the people became hasty and repeated in divorce, so ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ enforced them as three."
