What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn Ḥazm

الرواية عن علي باطلة لأنها عن داود الزعافري وهو في غاية السقوط ثم هي مرسلة لأن الشعبي لم يسمع من علي قط حديثا

machine translationThe report from ʿAlī is false (bāṭil), because it comes through Dāwūd al-Zaʿāfirī, who is extremely poor in reliability; then it is also mursal, because al-Shaʿbī never heard a single hadith from ʿAlī.

    in سنن الدارقطني, p. 3606
  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

    منقطع

    machine translationDisconnected (munqaṭiʿ)

  • ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Jawzī

قال ابن حبان داود الأودي ضعيف كان يقول بالرجعة ثم إن الشعبي لم يسمع من علي

machine translationIbn Ḥibbān said: Dāwūd al-Awdī is weak (ḍaʿīf); he used to hold the belief in the return (al-rajʿah). Moreover, al-Shaʿbī did not hear from ʿAlī.

    in سنن الدارقطني, p. 3606
  • أبو الحسنات اللكنوي

في سنده داود الأودي وهو ضعيف وله طرق أخرى في سنن الدارقطني ولا تخلو عن ضعف

machine translationIn its chain is Dāwūd al-Awdī, who is weak (ḍaʿīf). It has other routes in the Sunan of al-Dāraquṭnī, but they are not free of weakness.

    in سنن الدارقطني, p. 3606

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

وروي عن الشعبي عن علي مثله ولا يصح أيضا عن علي

machine translationIt is also narrated from al-Shaʿbī, from ʿAlī, similarly, and this too is not authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) from ʿAlī.

    in سنن الدارقطني, p. 3606
