✧ Khalid b. al-Walid sent me to Umar. I came to him while Uthman b. Affan, Abd al-Rahman b. Awf, Ali, Talhah, and al-Zubayr were with him, reclining in the mosque. I said, 'Khalid b. al-Walid sent me to you; he conveys his greetings to you and says: The people have become engrossed in wine and dispute about the punishment for it.' Umar said, 'These are here with you, so ask them.' Ali said, 'We think that when he drinks, he raves, and when he raves, he fabricates, and the fabricator is liable to eighty lashes.' Umar said, 'Convey to your companion what he said.' He said: So Khalid lashed eighty lashes, and Umar lashed eighty. He said: When a weak man who had been abased was brought to Umar, he lashed him forty. He said: And Uthman also lashed eighty and forty.
