Māʿiz b. Mālik came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of God, purify me." The Prophet ﷺ said: "Woe to you! Go back, seek God's forgiveness and repent to Him." He said: So he went back not far, then came and said: "O Messenger of God, purify me." The Prophet ﷺ said to him the same as before, until when it was the fourth time, he said to him: "From what shall I purify you?" He said: "From fornication." So the Prophet ﷺ asked: "Is he insane?" He was informed that he was not insane. He said: "Has he drunk wine?" A man stood up and smelled his breath, and did not find from him the smell of wine. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Are you previously married (thayyib)?" He said: "Yes." So he ordered concerning him and he was stoned. The people were in two groups about him: one group said: "Māʿiz has perished in the worst of his deeds; his sin has encompassed him." And another said: "Is there any repentance better than the repentance of Māʿiz, who came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, placed his hand in his hand, and said: Kill me with stones?" He said: They remained so for two or three days. Then the Prophet ﷺ came while they were sitting, greeted them with salām, sat down, and then said: "Ask forgiveness for Māʿiz b. Mālik." They said: "May God forgive Māʿiz b. Mālik." The Prophet ﷺ said: "He has repented with a repentance that, if it were divided among a nation, it would suffice them." He said: Then a woman of Ghāmid, from al-Azd, came to him and said: "O Messenger of God, purify me." He said: "Woe to you! Go back, seek God's forgiveness and repent to Him." She said: "Do you want to send me back as you sent back Māʿiz b. Mālik?" He said: "And what is that?" She said: "She is pregnant from fornication." He said: "Are you previously married?" She said: "Yes." He said: "Then we will not stone you until you give birth to what is in your womb." He said: A man of the Anṣār took charge of her until she gave birth. Then he came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "The woman of Ghāmid has given birth." He said: "Then we will not stone her and leave her child small with no one to nurse him." A man of the Anṣār stood up and said: "His nursing is my responsibility, O Prophet of God." So he stoned her.
