We came as a delegation to Muʿāwiyah, and Abū Hurayrah was with us. He said: Each man among us would prepare food and invite his companions, this one for one day and that one for another day. When it was my day, I said: O Abū Hurayrah, narrate to us from the Prophet ﷺ until our food is ready. He said: I was with the Prophet ﷺ on the day of the Conquest. He placed Khālid b. al-Walīd over one of the two flanks and placed al-Zubayr over the other, and placed Abū ʿUbaydah over the rearguard in the middle of the valley. Then he said to me: O Abū Hurayrah, call the Anṣār for me. He said: So I called them, and they came hurrying. He said: He said: O company of the Anṣār, these are the rabble of Quraysh. When you meet them tomorrow, mow them down completely. Then your meeting place is al-Ṣafā. He said: and he gestured with his hand. When the next day came, no one showed himself to them except that they laid him low. He said: And Allah granted conquest to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he came to al-Ṣafā and stood upon it. Abū Sufyān came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the greenery of Quraysh has been made lawful; there will be no Quraysh after today. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Whoever enters the house of Abū Sufyān is safe, whoever closes his door is safe, and whoever lays down his weapon is safe. He said: The Anṣār said: As for the man, compassion for his kinsfolk and love for his town have seized him. And revelation came down upon the Prophet of Allah ﷺ concerning that. He said: O company of the Anṣār, you said: As for the man, compassion for his kinsfolk and love for his town have seized him. Never! I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger. I emigrated to Allah and to you. The living is your living and the dying is your dying. They said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we only said that out of miserly attachment to Allah and His Messenger. He said: Indeed Allah the Exalted and His Messenger believe you and accept your excuse.
