حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حَرْبٍ وَسَعْدَانُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ قَالَا نا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ثنا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ شَقِيقٍ قَالَ

جَاءَنَا كِتَابُ عُمَرَ وَنَحْنُ بِخَانِقِينَ قَالَ فِي كِتَابِهِ إِنَّ الْأَهِلَّةَ بَعْضُهَا أَكْبَرُ مِنْ بَعْضٍ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْهِلَالَ نَهَارًا فَلَا تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى يَشْهَدَ شَاهِدَانِ

Translation

✧ Umar's letter came to us while we were at Khanqin. In his letter he said: “The crescents are some larger than others. If you see the crescent during the day, do not break your fast until two witnesses testify.”
