I came to the Prophet ﷺ asking his help with regard to a debt I had undertaken (ḥamālah). He said: "Stay with us, then either we will undertake it or we will help you. And know that begging is not permissible except for one of three men: a man who has undertaken a debt on behalf of a people, so he may ask until he pays it, then he refrains; and a man struck by a calamity that destroyed his wealth, so he may ask until he obtains a sufficiency of living, or a means of subsistence, then he refrains; and a man struck by poverty, until three persons of sound judgement, or of the righteous among his people, testify that begging has become lawful for him. Whatever else of begging there is, O Qabīṣah, is unlawful gain (suḥt), and its person eats it as unlawful gain."
