✧ Abu Bakr ᴿᴬ came to my father at his home and bought a saddle from him. He said to Azib, "Send your son to carry it with me." Al-Bara said: I carried it with him, and my father went out to count its price. My father said to him, "Abu Bakr, tell me how the two of you acted when you traveled by night with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said: Yes. We traveled through our night and into the following day until the heat of noon rose high, and the road became empty with no one passing along it. A tall rock with shade came into view for us, untouched by the sun, so we dismounted by it. I prepared a place with my own hand for the Prophet ﷺ to sleep on, spread a fur mat there, and said, "Sleep, Messenger of Allah, while I clear what is around you." He slept, and I went out clearing what was around him. Then I saw a shepherd coming with his sheep toward the rock, wanting from it the same thing we had wanted. I said, "Whom do you belong to, boy?" He said, "To a man from the people of Madinah or Makkah." I said, "Is there milk in your sheep?" He said, "Yes." I said, "Will you milk?" He said, "Yes." He took a ewe, and I said, "Clean the udder of dust, hair, and dirt." He said: I saw al-Bara striking one of his hands against the other, shaking it off. He milked a small amount of milk into a wooden bowl, and I had with me a small waterskin that I had carried for the Prophet ﷺ so he could drink his fill from it and perform wudu. I came to the Prophet ﷺ, but I disliked waking him, so I met him just as he woke up. I poured some water over the milk until its lower part became cool, then I said, "Drink, Messenger of Allah." He said: He drank until I was satisfied, then he said: "Has the time not come to depart?" I said, "Yes." He said: We then set out after the sun had declined, and Suraqah ibn Malik followed us. I said, "We have been overtaken, Messenger of Allah." He said: "Do not grieve; indeed, Allah is with us." The Prophet ﷺ then supplicated against him, and his horse sank with him up to its belly, I think, in hard ground—Zuhayr was uncertain. He said, "I think you two have supplicated against me, so supplicate for me. By Allah, I pledge to you both that I will turn the pursuers away from you." The Prophet ﷺ supplicated for him, and he was saved. Then he would not meet anyone except that he said, "I have taken care of what is here for you," and he would not meet anyone except that he turned him back. He said: And he fulfilled his promise to us.
