✧ I heard al-Bara' say: Abu Bakr bought a saddle from 'Azib for thirteen dirhams. Abu Bakr ؓ said to 'Azib, "Tell al-Bara' to carry it to my family." 'Azib said to him, "No, not until you tell me how you and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ managed when you left Makkah while the polytheists were seeking you." He said, "We departed from Makkah and traveled through our night until morning came and the midday heat stood still. I cast my eyes to see if we could find some shade to take shelter in, and lo, I saw a rock, and when I reached it, there was still some shade left, so I smoothed it out and then spread a bed for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then I said, 'Lie down, O Messenger of Allah.' So he lay down. Then I went to look whether I could see anyone from the pursuers, and lo, I saw a shepherd driving his sheep to the rock, wanting from it the same as I wanted, meaning the shade. I asked him, 'To whom do you belong, O boy?' The boy said, 'To so-and-so, a man of Quraysh,' and I recognized him. I said, 'Is there any milk in your sheep?' He said, 'Yes.' I said, 'Will you milk some for me?' He said, 'Yes.' So I ordered him, and he seized a ewe from his flock. I ordered him to dust off the dirt from it, then I ordered him to dust off his hands, and he did thus — he struck one hand against the other — and he milked into a small amount of milk. I had with me a water-skin for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a cloth over its mouth, and I poured water over the milk until its bottom was cool."
