حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ نَا حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، نَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ حَسَّانَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي الْقَلُوصُ بِنْتُ عُلَيْبَةَ - وَكَانَتْ تَحْتَ شِهَابِ بْنِ مُدْلِجٍ الْكَعْبِيِّ
أَنَّهُ كَانَ بِالْبَصْرَةِ ثُمَّ تَعَرَّبَ، فَنَزَلَ اللهَابَةَ فَكَثُرَ بِهَا مَالُهُ وَوَلَدُهُ، ثُمَّ تَسَابَّ بَنُوهُ فِي قَوْمِهِمْ، فَقَالُوا: يَا بَنِي الْمُنَافِقِ تَرَكَ أَبُوكُمُ الْهِجْرَةَ وَتَعَرَّبَ، وَأَنَّهُ وَجَدَ ذَاكَ فِي نَفْسِهِ أَنْ سُبَّ بِذَاكَ، فَدَعَا ابْنَهُ سَلْمَانَ، فَأَتَاهُ بِرَوَاحِلَ ثَلَاثٍ، فَحَمَلَ غُلَامَهُ عَلَى زَامِلَةٍ، وَارْتَحَلَ هُوَ وَابْنُهُ، ثُمَّ خَرَجَ حَتَّى أَتَى بَقِيعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بِالْمَدِينَةِ، ثُمَّ أَخَذَ بِيَدِ ابْنِهِ سَلْمَانَ، حَتَّى أَتَيَا الدَّوْسِيَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يُحَدِّثُ النَّاسَ، فَكَانَ أَوَّلُ مَا فَهِمُوا مِنْهُ أَنْ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ: إِنَّ مِنْ خَيْرِ النَّاسِ رَجُلَيْنِ؛ رَجُلٌ أَنْفَقَ مَالَهُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، ثُمَّ غَزَا بِنَفْسِهِ حَتَّى هَبَطَ بِلَادًا يَسُوءُ الْعَدُوَّ أَنْ يَهْبِطَهَا، ثُمَّ يَمُوتُ أَوْ يُقْتَلُ. أَوْ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَادِيَةِ فِي إِبِلِهِ يَتَنَحَّى عَنْ شُرُورِ النَّاسِ وَيُقِيمُ الصَّلَوَاتِ الْخَمْسَ وَيُعْطِي حَقَّ مَالِهِ وَيَعْبُدُ اللهَ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَهُ الْيَقِينُ، فَبَرَكَ شِهَابٌ عَلَى رُكْبَتَيْهِ حَتَّى قَابَلَهُ، فَقَالَ: أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَهَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ؟ قَالَ: إِي وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ بِيَدِهِ، حَتَّى حَلَفَ لَهَا بِهَا ثَلَاثَ مِرَارٍ، فَاكْتَفَى شِهَابٌ مِنَ الْفُتْيَا الَّتِي جَاءَ يَطْلُبُ، ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَلَّى سَجَدَاتٍ، ثُمَّ أَتَى رِكَابَهُ فَرَكِبَهَا، حَتَّى جَعَلُوا الْمَدِينَةَ خَلْفَ ظُهُورِهِمْ، فَقَالَ لِابْنِهِ: وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ شِهَابٍ بِيَدِهِ، لَوْلَا مَا

✧ He was in al-Baṣrah, then he became a Bedouin. He settled in al-Lahābah, and his wealth and children increased there. Then his sons reviled each other among their people, saying: “O sons of the hypocrite! Your father abandoned the emigration and became a Bedouin.” He felt hurt that he was reviled for that. So he called his son Salmān, and he brought him three riding camels. He loaded his servant on one baggage camel, and he and his son mounted. Then he set out until he came to the Baqīʿ of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in al-Madīnah. Then he took his son Salmān by the hand until they came to al-Dawsī, Abū Hurayrah, the Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, while he was narrating to the people. The first thing they understood from him was that he said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said one day: ‘Among the best of people are two men: a man who spends his wealth in the cause of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, then goes on a military expedition himself until he descends upon lands whose descent displeases the enemy, then dies or is killed; or a man from the desert people with his camels who withdraws from the evils of people, establishes the five prayers, gives the due right of his wealth, and worships Allah until certainty comes to him.’” So Shihāb knelt on his knees until he faced him and said: “Did you hear it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” He said: “Yes, by the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Abū Hurayrah,” and he swore to it three times. Shihāb was satisfied with the legal ruling he had come seeking. Then he stood and performed several prostrations, then came to his mount and rode it until they left al-Madīnah behind their backs.
