✧ Three men went out to seek extra provision for their families. They were caught by rain and took refuge in a cave. He said: A rock fell over them—I think he said—from the mouth of the cave and blocked the cave mouth, and it settled leaving a gap away from them. He said: The men said to one another: The tracks have been effaced, the rock has fallen, and none knows your place except Allah, the Exalted. So come, let each man of you call upon Allah with the most trustworthy deed he has ever done for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, hoping that He will bring you out from your place. One of them said: O Allah, if You know that I was dutiful to my parents, and that I had let my sheep rest one night, and I used to milk them for my parents, and I came to them while they were lying on their bed, so that I might give them drink with my own hand, and I came to them one of those nights, and I brought their drink, but I found them asleep. I began to desire for them to remain asleep, and I disliked waking them, and I disliked returning with the drink so that they would wake and not find me with them. So I stood in my place, standing at their heads like that until morning. O Allah, if You know that I did that seeking Your countenance, then open a way for us. He said: A third of the rock shifted—or a word like that—opening. They said to the next, 'O man,' and the second said: O Allah, if You know that I loved a cousin of mine with intense love, and I—I think he said—asked her family for her hand, but they refused me, until I made for her what she accepted between me and her. Then I summoned her and was alone with her, and I took from her the seat a man takes from a woman, but she said: 'It is not lawful for you to break the seal except by its right.' So my soul withdrew from her, and I honored her right over herself and over me. O Allah, if You know that I did that seeking Your countenance, then open a way for us. He said: The rock shifted—or a word like that—opening. And they said to the third, 'O you, say.' The third said: O Allah, if You know that a worker worked for me for a ṣāʿ of food, and the worker departed without taking his ṣāʿ, and remained away from me for a long time, I took his ṣāʿ and kept cultivating it until from that ṣāʿ there accumulated many cattle, many sheep, and much wealth. Then that worker came to me after a time seeking the ṣāʿ of food, and I said to him: 'Your ṣāʿ of food has become much wealth, many sheep, and many cattle, so take all this, for it is from that ṣāʿ.' He said to me: 'Are you mocking me?' I said to him: 'No, by Allah, but it is the truth.' So he went off driving all the wealth. O Allah, if You know that I did that seeking Your countenance, then open a way for us. The rock split and fell, and they came out walking. This ḥadīth, we do not know anyone who narrated it from ʿAwf, from Khilās, except al-Muʿtamir.
