machine translationIt is narrated by Sumayy, the freedman of Abū Bakr b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, and there is disagreement concerning him. Muḥammad b. ʿAjlān narrated it from Sumayy, and there is disagreement concerning Ibn ʿAjlān. Yaʿqūb al-Iskandarānī, Layth b. Saʿd, Muḥammad b. al-Zibriqān Abū Hammām, Yaḥyā b. Ayyūb al-Miṣrī and ʿAbdullāh b. Jaʿfar al-Madīnī narrated it from Ibn ʿAjlān, from Sumayy, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah. Wuhayb b. Khālid contradicted them: he narrated it from Ibn ʿAjlān, from Sumayy, from al-Nuʿmān b. Abī ʿAyyāsh al-Zuraqī, as a mursal report from the Prophet ﷺ. He was followed by Sufyān al-Thawrī, Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah and others, who narrated it from Sumayy, from al-Nuʿmān b. Abī ʿAyyāsh, as Wuhayb said from Ibn ʿAjlān, and this is the correct (ṣawāb) version. Ibn Jurayj said: I was informed from Sumayy, from al-Nuʿmān b. Abī ʿAyyāsh, also as a mursal report. It is also said that it is from Ṣafwān b. ʿĪsā, from Ibn ʿAjlān, from Sumayy, from al-Nuʿmān b. Abī ʿAyyāsh, as a mursal report.

machine translationThis is a hadith we only know from the hadith of al-Layth from Ibn ʿAjlān. Ibn ʿUyaynah and more than one other narrated this hadith from Sumayy, from al-Nuʿmān b. Abī ʿAyyāsh, from the Prophet ﷺ, similar to this. Their narration seems sounder (aṣaḥḥ) than the narration of al-Layth.
