✧ Give charity, for I intend to dispatch an expedition. 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf came and said: O Messenger of God, I have four thousand: two thousand I lend to my Lord, and two thousand for my family. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: May God bless you in what you gave and bless you in what you kept. A man from the Ansar came, having obtained two sa's of dates, and said: O Messenger of God, I obtained two sa's of dates: one sa' I lend to my Lord, and one sa' for my family. The hypocrites disparaged him and said: What Ibn 'Awf gave was only for show, and: Are God and His Messenger not free from need of this man's sa'? Then God, blessed and exalted, revealed: Those who criticize the volunteers among the believers concerning charities and those who find nothing but their effort, to the end of the verse.
