machine translationIt is reported that the majority declared this hadith weak (ḍaʿīf), and al-Tirmidhī was criticised for grading it good (ḥasan).
machine translationThese two hadiths from Ṣafwān are known through the narration of Ḥunayn b. Abī Ḥakīm from him, and from Ḥunayn, Ibn Lahīʿah.

machine translationMuḥammad b. ʿAmr and Ṣafwān b. Sulaym narrate it, and it was narrated from al-ʿAlāʾ, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah; Zuhayr b. Muḥammad said this from him, and it is not preserved (maḥfūẓ).
in مسند البزار, p. 8573 - ʿAlī al-Madīnī

machine translationI do not know of any established hadith on 'whoever washes a deceased person, let him bathe'; and had it been established, we would be obliged to act on it.
machine translationThe upshot is that its attribution to the Prophet (marfūʿ) is weak, and its being a statement of the Companion (mawqūf) is sound (ṣaḥīḥ).
in مسند البزار, p. 8573 - Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī
machine translationIn its chain of transmission are Ibn Lahīʿah and Ḥunayn b. Abī Ḥakīm, and neither of them is to be relied upon as proof.
