حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ كَثِيرٍ وَوَجَدْنَا هَذِهِ الْأَحَادِيثَ مَكْتُوبَةً بِخَطِّي عَنْهُ قَالَ: نَا ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ عَنْ رَوْحِ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ، عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ:

سُئِلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَنِ الْغِيبَةِ فَقَالَ: تَذْكُرُ أَخَاكَ بِمَا يَكْرَهُ قَالَ: فَإِنْ كَانَ فِي أَخِي مَا أَقُولُ ؟ قَالَ: فَإِنْ كَانَ فِيهِ مَا تَقُولُ فَقَدِ اغْتَبْتَهُ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فِيهِ فَقَدْ بَهَتَّهُ

✧ The Prophet ﷺ was asked about backbiting and said: 'It is mentioning your brother with what he dislikes.' He said: 'What if what I say is true of my brother?' He said: 'If what you say is true of him, you have backbitten him, and if it is not true, you have slandered him.'
