There were three men among the Children of Israel: a leper, a bald man, and a blind man. God, Blessed and Exalted, wished to test them, so He sent an angel to them. He came to the leper and said: "What thing is most beloved to you?" He said: "A good colour and good skin, for people find me repulsive." He said: So he wiped him and it went away, and he was given a good colour and good skin. He said: "Which property is most beloved to you?" He said: "Camels," or he said "cattle." He said: So he was given a pregnant she-camel, ten months along. The angel said: "May God bless you in it." He said: As for the bald man, he said to him: "What thing is most beloved to you?" He said: "Good hair, and that this be removed from me, for people find me repulsive." He said: So he wiped him and it went away, and he was given good hair. He said: "Which property is most beloved to you?" He said: "Cattle." So he gave him a pregnant cow and said: "May you be blessed in it." As for the blind man, he said: "What thing is most beloved to you?" He said: "That God restore my sight to me, so that I may see people with it." He said: So he wiped him and God restored his sight to him. He said: "Which property is most beloved to you?" He said: "Sheep." So he gave him a ewe about to give birth. Then these two [the camel and the cow] bore young, and this one [the ewe] gave birth, so that one had a valley of camels, another a valley of cattle, and another a valley of sheep. Then the angel came to the leper in his former form and appearance and said: "I am a poor man; my means have been cut off on my journey, and today there is no reaching my destination except through God and then through you. I ask you, by the One who gave you the good colour, the good skin and wealth, for a camel with which I may complete my journey." He said to him: "There are many claims upon me." The angel said to him: "It is as though I know you. Were you not a poor leper, and God gave you [wealth]?" He said: "I inherited this wealth from one great man after another." The angel said: "If you are lying, may God return you to what you were." And he came to the bald man in his former form and appearance and said to him the same as he had said to the first, and he replied to him the same as the first had replied. He said: "If you are lying, may God return you to what you were." And he came to the blind man in his former form and said: "I am a poor man and a traveller; my means have been cut off on my journey, and today there is no reaching my destination except through God and then through you. I ask you, by the One who restored your sight to you, for a sheep with which I may complete my journey." He said: "I was blind and God restored my sight to me, and I was poor. So take whatever you wish. By God, today I will not hold back from you anything that you take for God's sake." The angel said: "Keep your wealth, for you were only being tested. God is pleased with you [unclear] and is displeased with your two companions."
