✧ Ali b. Abi Talib ؓ addressed us and said, "O people, tell me who is the bravest of people?" They said—or he said: we said—"You, O Commander of the Faithful." He said, "Indeed, I have never dueled anyone except that I prevailed over him. But tell me who is the bravest of people." They said, "We do not know. Who is it?" He said, "Abu Bakr ؓ. On the day of Badr, we made a shelter for the Messenger of God ﷺ and said, 'Who will stay with the Messenger of God ﷺ, lest one of the polytheists attack him?' By God, none came near him except Abu Bakr, brandishing a sword over the head of the Messenger of God ﷺ; no one attacked him except that Abu Bakr attacked him. So this is the bravest of people." Ali said, "I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ when Quraysh seized him: this one trampling him, this one shaking him, while they said, 'You are the one who made the gods one God.' By God, none came near him except Abu Bakr, striking this one, trampling that one, and shaking that one, while saying, 'Woe to you! Will you kill a man because he says, "My Lord is God"?'" Then Ali lifted a cloak that was on him and wept until his beard was soaked, then said, "I adjure you by God: is the believer of the family of Pharaoh better or Abu Bakr?" The people remained silent. He said, "Will you not answer me? By God, an hour of Abu Bakr is better than the earth filled with the believer of the family of Pharaoh. That was a man who concealed his faith, and this is a man who proclaimed his faith."
