✧ What Sa'id b. al-Musayyib narrated from Abu Hurayra

حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ، قَالَ: نَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ، قَالَ: نَا شُعَيْبٌ، يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ وَأَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ:
إِنَّكُمْ تَقُولُونَ إِنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ يُكْثِرُ الْحَدِيثَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، وَتَقُولُونَ: مَا لِلْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنْصَارِ لَا يُحَدِّثُونَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مِثْلَ حَدِيثِ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؟ وَإِنَّ إِخْوَانِي مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ كَانَ يَشْغَلُهُمُ الصَّفْقُ فِي الْأَسْوَاقِ، وَكَانَ يَشْغَلُ إِخْوَانِي مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ عَمَلُ أَمْوَالِهِمْ، وَكُنْتُ امْرَأً مِسْكِينًا مِنْ مَسَاكِينِ الصُّفَّةِ، أَخْدُمُ رَسُولَ اللهِ عَلَى مِلْءِ بَطْنِي فَأَحْضُرُ حِينَ يَغِيبُونَ وَأَذْكُرُ حِينَ يَنْسَوْنَ، وَقَالَ لِي فِي حَدِيثٍ يُحَدِّثُهُ: إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ أَحَدٌ يَبْسُطُ ثَوْبَهُ حَتَّى أَقْضِيَ مَقَالَتِي هَذِهِ، ثُمَّ يَجْمَعُ إِلَيْهِ ثَوْبَهُ إِلَّا وَعَى مَا أَقُولُ، فَبَسَطْتُ نَمِرَةً عَلَيَّ حَتَّى إِذَا قَضَى النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مَقَالَتَهُ جَمَعْتُهَا إِلَى صَدْرِي، فَمَا نَسِيتُ مِنْ مَقَالَةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ تِلْكَ شَيْئًا

✧ You say that Abu Hurayra narrates many hadiths from the Prophet ﷺ, and you say: Why do the Muhajirun and the Ansar not narrate from the Prophet ﷺ like Abu Hurayra's narration? My brothers among the Muhajirun were busy trading in the markets, and my brothers among the Ansar were busy working on their properties. I was a poor man from the poor of the Suffa, serving the Messenger of Allah for the fill of my stomach. I was present when they were absent, and I remembered when they forgot. And he said to me in a hadith he was narrating: There is no one who spreads his garment until I finish this statement of mine, then gathers his garment to himself, but will retain what I say. So I spread a striped cloak over myself, and when the Prophet ﷺ finished his statement, I gathered it to my chest, and I did not forget anything from that statement of the Messenger of Allah.
