✧ I was the waterer of the people with figs and raisins that we had mixed together. Among the people was a man called Abu Bakr, a man from Kinanah. When he drank, he said: 'Greet Umm Bakr with peace; is there for you, after your people, any peace? The Messenger tells us that we shall live again, but how can there be life for decayed skulls and bones?' While we were thus, with the people drinking, a man from the Muslims entered upon us and said: 'What are you doing? Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has sent down the prohibition of wine.' So we poured out the large bowl and overturned it. Then we went out and found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ standing on the pulpit reciting this verse and repeating it: 'Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through wine and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist?' (Qur'an 5:91).
