✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us one day while he was angry, and we thought that Gabriel ﷺ was with him, until he ascended the pulpit. I have never seen a day with more weeping and veiling of faces than that. He said, “Ask me, for by Allah, you will not ask me about anything except that I will inform you of it.” A man stood up to him and said, “O Messenger of Allah, who is my father?” He said, “Your father is Hudhafah, the one to whom you were attributed.” Another stood up and said, “O Messenger of Allah, am I in Paradise or in the Fire?” He said, “No, rather in the Fire.” Another stood up and said, “O Messenger of Allah, is Hajj obligatory upon us every year?” He said, “If I were to say it, it would become obligatory, and if it became obligatory, you would not be able to do it, and if you did not do it, you would be punished.” Then Umar b. al-Khattab, may Allah have mercy on him, stood up and said, “We are content with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion, and with Muhammad as Messenger. We have only recently left the era of ignorance, so do not expose our faults or disgrace us by revealing our secrets. Pardon us, may Allah pardon you.” He said, “Then his anger subsided, and he turned toward the wall and said, ‘I have not seen a day like today in good and evil; Paradise and the Fire were brought near to this wall.’”
