✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ conquered Khaybar. Al-Ḥajjāj b. ʿIlāṭ said: O Messenger of God, I have wealth in Makkah and family there, and I want to go to them. Am I absolved if I speak against you or say something? The Messenger of God ﷺ permitted him to say whatever he wished. When he arrived, he went to his wife and said: Gather whatever you have, for I want to buy from the spoils of Muhammad and his companions, for they have been raided and their wealth has been taken. He said: That spread through Makkah, and the Muslims became despondent, while the polytheists showed joy and delight. He said: The news reached al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and he sat in his gathering, unable to stand. Maʿmar said: ʿUthmān al-Jazarī reported to me from Miqsam, who said: Al-ʿAbbās took a son of his named Qutham, who resembled the Messenger of God ﷺ, and lay down, placing him on his chest, saying: My beloved Qutham, who resembles the one with the lofty nose, the Prophet of blessings, in spite of those who resent it. Maʿmar said: Thābit said, from Anas: Then he sent for al-Ḥajjāj b. ʿIlāṭ and said: Woe to you, what have you brought? Al-Ḥajjāj said to his servant: Convey greetings to Abū al-Faḍl and tell him: Let him prepare a private room for his son, for the matter is as he likes. His servant came, and when he reached the door, he said: Rejoice, Abū al-Faḍl. Al-ʿAbbās jumped up joyfully and kissed him between the eyes. The servant informed him of what al-Ḥajjāj had said, and al-ʿAbbās embraced him. Then al-Ḥajjāj came and informed him that the Messenger of God ﷺ had conquered Khaybar and taken their wealth as spoils, and God's shares were distributed among their wealth. The Messenger of God ﷺ chose Ṣafiyyah bt. Ḥuyayy and took her for himself. He gave her the choice between freeing her and her being his wife, or joining her family, and she chose that he free her and she be his wife. But I came for wealth I had here, to gather it and take it away. I asked permission of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he permitted me to say whatever I wished. So conceal my matter for three days, then say what you like. His wife gathered what she had of jewelry or goods and gave it to him. After three days, al-ʿAbbās came to the wife of al-Ḥajjāj and said: What has al-Ḥajjāj done? She told him that he had left and said: Do not be grieved, Abū al-Faḍl, by what you heard. He said: Indeed, God will not grieve me, and by the praise of God, it was only what we love.
