وَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، نَا عُمَرُ بْنُ أَبِي خَلِيفَةَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا بَدْرٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ;
جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي أُذْنِبُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِذَا أَذْنَبْتَ فَاسْتَغْفِرْ رَبَّكَ، قَالَ: فَإِنِّي أَسْتَغْفِرُ، ثُمَّ أَعُودُ فَأُذْنِبُ، قَالَ: فَإِذَا أَذْنَبْتَ فَعُدْ فَاسْتَغْفِرْ رَبَّكَ، قَالَ: فَإِنِّي أَسْتَغْفِرُ، ثُمَّ أَعُودُ فَأُذْنِبُ، قَالَ: فَإِذَا أَذْنَبْتَ فَعُدْ فَاسْتَغْفِرْ رَبَّكَ، فَقَالَهَا فِي الرَّابِعَةِ فَقَالَ: اسْتَغْفِرْ رَبَّكَ حَتَّى يَكُونَ الشَّيْطَانُ هُوَ الْمَحْسُورَ
Translation

✧ A man came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: O Messenger of God, I commit sins. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: When you sin, seek forgiveness from your Lord. He said: I seek forgiveness, then I go back and sin. He said: When you sin, go back and seek forgiveness from your Lord. He said: I seek forgiveness, then I go back and sin. He said: When you sin, go back and seek forgiveness from your Lord. He said it the fourth time, and he said: Seek forgiveness from your Lord until Satan is the one who is exhausted.
