I used to raise my voice above that of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' The Prophet ﷺ noticed his absence and said, 'Why do I not see Thābit? Is he ill?' Saʿd said, 'He is my neighbor, and I know of no complaint of his.' Saʿd mentioned that to Thābit and said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has noticed your absence.' He said, 'This verse has been revealed, and I used to raise my voice above that of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so I am one of the people of the Fire.'
