✧ A boy from among us, from the Ansar, said on the day of Hunayn: 'We will not be defeated today due to lack of numbers.' But no sooner did we meet our enemy than the people fled. The Messenger of God ﷺ was on a mule of his, with Abu Sufyan b. al-Harith holding its bridle and al-Abbas, his uncle, holding its stirrup. We were in a sandy valley, and the dust rose so that none of us could see his own hand. Then a figure approached. He said to him: 'Come forward; who are you?' He said: 'I am Abu Bakr; may my father and mother be your ransom.' He had some ten-odd wounds. Then another figure approached, and he said: 'Come forward; who are you?' He said: 'Umar b. al-Khattab; may my father and mother be your ransom.' He had some ten-odd wounds. Then another figure approached with some twenty-odd wounds, and he said: 'Come forward; who are you?' He said: 'Uthman b. Affan; may my father and mother be your ransom.' Then another figure approached with some ten-odd wounds, and he said: 'Come forward; who are you?' He said: 'Ali b. Abi Talib; may my father and mother be your ransom.' Then the people advanced. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Is there not a man with a loud voice who can go and call out among the people?' A man went and shouted, and no sooner did his voice reach their ears than they came back. The Prophet ﷺ charged, and the Muslims charged with him, and the polytheists fled. Durayd b. al-Simmah withdrew to a small mountain — or he said: to a hill — with about six hundred men. Some of the people said to him: 'By God, I see a troop has come.' He said: 'Leave them to me.' He said: 'Their mark is such-and-such, from their appearance such-and-such.' He said: 'No harm to you; Quda'ah is moving off in the tracks of the people.' They said: 'By God, we see a rough troop has come.' He said: 'Leave them to me.' He said: 'Their mark is such-and-such, from their appearance such-and-such.' He said: 'No harm to you; this is Sulaym.' Then they said: 'We see a horseman has come.' He said: 'Woe to you! Alone?' They said: 'Alone.' He said: 'Leave him to me.' They said: 'He has wrapped his head with a black turban.' Durayd said: 'That, by God, is al-Zubayr b. al-Awwam, and he, by God, is your killer and the one who will expel you from this place of yours.' He turned to them and said: 'Why are these left here?' Then he went on with those who followed him, and he killed about three hundred, and he cut off the head of Durayd b. al-Simmah and placed it before him.
