✧ He was in the army that was with Ali b. Abi Talib ؓ that marched against the Kharijites. Ali ؓ said: O people, I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: “A people from my community will come out who recite the Quran; your recitation is nothing compared to theirs, nor your prayer compared to theirs, nor your fasting compared to theirs. They recite the Quran but it does not pass beyond their collarbones. They pass out of Islam as an arrow passes through its target. If the army that encounters them knew what was decreed for them on the tongue of their Prophet ﷺ, they would refrain from action. The sign of that is that among them is a man with an upper arm but no forearm, and on his upper arm is something like a woman’s nipple with white hairs on it. You are going to Muawiyah and the people of Syria and leaving these to succeed you in your offspring and wealth. By God, I hope they are these people, for they shed sacred blood and raided people’s livestock. So march in the name of God.” When we met, the Kharijites that day were under Abdullah b. Wahb al-Rasibi. He said to them: Throw down your spears and draw your swords from their scabbards, for I fear they will appeal to you as they appealed to you on the day of Harura. He said: So they drew their swords, and the rest of the people engaged with their spears. Then they came at one another, and no one from the people was struck that day except two men. Then Ali ؓ said: Search among them for the maimed one. Ali ؓ stood up himself and searched for him and found him. He said: God and His Messenger have spoken the truth. Ubaydah stood up to him and said: O Commander of the Faithful, by God, other than whom there is no god, did you hear this from the Messenger of God ﷺ? He said: By God, other than whom there is no god, I heard this hadith. He made him swear three times, and he kept swearing to him.
