حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، أَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ:

بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ خَالِدَ بْنَ الْوَلِيدِ إِلَى بَنِي جَذِيمَةَ فَدَعَاهُمْ إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ فَلَمْ يُحْسِنُوا أَنْ يَقُولُوا: أَسْلَمْنَا، فَجَعَلُوا يَقُولُونَ: صَبَأْنَا صَبَأْنَا، وَجَعَلَ خَالِدٌ بِهِمْ قَتْلًا وَأَسْرًا، وَدَفَعَ إِلَى كُلِّ رَجُلٍ أَسِيرَهُ حَتَّى إِذَا أَصْبَحَ أَمَرَ خَالِدٌ أَنْ يَقْتُلَ كُلُّ رَجُلٍ مِنَّا أَسِيرَهُ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ذُكِرَ لَهُ صَنِيعُ خَالِدٍ، فَرَفَعَ يَدَيْهِ فَقَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَبْرَأُ إِلَيْكَ مِمَّا صَنَعَ خَالِدٌ. ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ

Translation

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Khalid b. al-Walid to Banu Jadhimah. He invited them to Islam, but they could not say it correctly: 'We have submitted.' They kept saying: 'We have turned Sabian, we have turned Sabian.' Khalid began killing and taking captives, and he gave each man his captive. When morning came, Khalid ordered that each of us kill his captive. When we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Khalid's action was mentioned to him, so he raised his hands and said three times: O Allah, I declare myself innocent before You of what Khalid has done.
