حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي الْحَارِثِ، قَالَ: نَا شَبَابَةُ بْنُ سَوَّارٍ، قَالَ: نَا شُعَيْبُ بْنُ مَيْمُونٍ، عَنْ حُصَيْنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ، قَالَ:

قِيلَ لِعَلِيٍّ ؓ: أَلَا تَسْتَخْلِفُ عَلَيْنَا ؟ قَالَ: " مَا اسْتَخْلَفَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَسْتَخْلِفَ عَلَيْكُمْ، وَإِنْ يُرِدِ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى بِالنَّاسِ خَيْرًا فَسَيَجْمَعُهُمْ عَلَى خَيْرِهِمْ كَمَا جَمَعَهُمْ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهِمْ ﷺ عَلَى خَيْرِهِمْ

Translation

✧ It was said to ʿAlī ؓ: Will you not appoint a successor over us? He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ did not appoint a successor, so I will not appoint a successor over you. If God, Blessed and Exalted, wills good for the people, He will gather them around the best of them, just as He gathered them after their Prophet ﷺ around the best of them.
