حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى، قَالَ: نَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ الرَّازِيُّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا سِنَانٍ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ، قَالَ:
قُلْتُ لِشَقِيقِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ: حَدِّثْنِي عَنْ ذِي الثُّدَيَّةِ، قَالَ: لَمَّا قَاتَلْنَاهُمْ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ: اطْلُبُوا رَجُلًا عَلَامَتُهُ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَطَلَبْنَاهُ فَلَمْ نَجِدْهُ، فَقُلْنَا لَهُ لَمْ نَجِدْهُ، فَبَكَى، فَقَالَ: اطْلُبُوهُ فَوَاللهِ مَا كَذَبْتُ وَلَا كُذِبْتُ، قَالَ: فَطَلَبْنَاهُ فَلَمْ نَجِدْهُ، فَبَكَى، فَقَالَ: اطْلُبُوا فَوَاللهِ مَا كَذَبْتُ وَلَا كُذِبْتُ، فَطَلَبْنَاهُ فَلَمْ نَجِدْهُ، قَالَ: فَرَكِبَ بَغْلَتَهُ الشَّهْبَاءَ فَطَلَبْنَاهُ، فَوَجَدْنَاهُ تَحْتَ بُرْدِيٍّ، فَلَمَّا رَآهُ سَجَدَ

✧ I said to Shaqīq b. Salama: Tell me about Dhū al-Thudayya. He said: When we fought them, ʿAlī ؓ said: Look for a man whose mark is such and such. So we looked for him but did not find him. We said to him, 'We did not find him,' and he wept. Then he said: Look for him, for by God I have not lied, nor have I been lied to. So we looked for him and did not find him, and he wept. Then he said: Search, for by God I have not lied, nor have I been lied to. So we looked for him and did not find him. Then he mounted his grey mule and we searched, and found him beneath some papyrus. When he saw him, he prostrated.
