✧ While three men were walking, rain caught them, so they took shelter in a cave in a mountain and entered it. A rock rolled down onto the mouth of their cave and sealed them in. They said to one another: "Consider the righteous deeds you have done, and call upon Allah by them, perhaps He will open it or relieve us through them." One of them said: "O Allah, I had two elderly parents, a wife, and small children. I used to tend flocks for them, and when I returned to them I would milk and begin with my parents, giving them drink before [the children]. One day I was delayed and did not come until evening; I found them asleep. I milked as I used to milk, brought the milk vessel, and stood by their heads, disliking to wake them and disliking to begin with the children before them, while the children were crying at my feet. That remained my practice and theirs until dawn broke. If You know that I did that seeking Your Face, then open for us an opening from which we may see the sky." So Allah opened an opening from it and they saw the sky. The second said: "O Allah, if You know that I had a cousin whom I loved as intensely as a man can love women. I sought herself from her, but she refused until I brought her a hundred dinars. I worked until I brought a hundred dinars and came to her with them. When I was between her legs, she said: 'O servant of Allah, fear Allah, and do not break the seal except by its right.' So I got up from her. If You know that I did that seeking Your Face, then open for us an opening." So He opened for them an opening. The third said: "O Allah, if You know that I hired a laborer for a measure of maize. When he finished his work, he said: 'Give me my right.' I offered him his measure, but he left it and disdained it. I continued to cultivate it until I gathered from it cows and their herder. Then he came to me and said: 'Fear Allah and do not wrong me; give me my right.' I said: 'Go to those cows and their herder.' He said: 'Fear Allah and do not mock me.' I said: 'I am not mocking you; take those cows and their herder.' So he took them and went away. If You know that I did that seeking Your Face, then open." So He opened it from them and they came out. I think he said: "walking away." And the hadith of Ubayd Allah b. Umar we do not know anyone who narrated it except Ali b. Mushir and Junada b. Salm. Thus in the edition of Maktabat al-Ulum wal-Hikam, and the correct is: from us.
