✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent me, al-Miqdad, and al-Zubayr, and said: Go until you come to the meadow of Khakh, for there is a woman in a litter with a letter; take it from her. So we set off, our horses racing, until we reached the meadow, and there was the woman. We said: Bring out the letter. She said: I have no letter. I said: You will bring out the letter or you will shed your clothes. So she brought it out from her braids. We brought it to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and in it was: From Hatib b. Abi Balta'ah to some people of the polytheists in Makkah, informing them of some of the affairs of the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said: "O Hatib, what is this?" He said: O Messenger of God, do not hasten against me. I was an ally attached to Quraysh and not one of their own. Those with you of the Emigrants had relatives in Makkah to protect their families, so I wanted to take a hand with them to protect my relatives. I did not do that out of disbelief or apostasy from my religion, nor preferring disbelief. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "He has told you the truth." Umar—I think—said: O Messenger of God, let me strike the neck of this hypocrite. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "What do you know? Perhaps God looked upon this band of the people of Badr and said: Do whatever you wish, for I have forgiven you."
