✧ 'Umar ؓ used to give permission to the people of Badr, and he gave permission to me along with them. Some of them said: Do you give permission to this young man to join us when among our sons there are those like him? 'Umar said: He is one of those whom you know. One day he gave them permission, and gave me permission with them. He asked them about this surah: 'When God's help and victory comes' (Qur'an 110:1). They said: God, Blessed and Exalted, commanded His Prophet that when God grants him victory, he should seek His forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance. He said: What do you say, O Ibn 'Abbas? I said: It is not like that. Rather, He informed His Prophet of the approach of his term. He said: 'When God's help and victory comes'—the victory of Makkah—'and you see the people entering God's religion in multitudes,' that is a sign of your death. 'Then glorify with praise of your Lord and seek His forgiveness. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance.' 'Umar said to them: How can you blame me regarding him after what you have seen?
