حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدَةَ قَالَ: أَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ عَمْرٍو عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ قَالَ:

لَحِقَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ رَجُلًا فِي غُنَيْمَةٍ لَهُ فَسَلَّمَ فَقَتَلُوهُ وَأَخَذُوا غُنَيْمَتَهُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ: وَلا تَقُولُوا لِمَنْ أَلْقَى إِلَيْكُمُ السَّلامَ لَسْتَ مُؤْمِنًا تَبْتَغُونَ عَرَضَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا الْغُنَيْمَةَ

Translation

Chain of narrators

✧ The Muslims overtook a man with his small flock of sheep. He greeted them with salam, but they killed him and took his flock. So Allah revealed: “And do not say to one who offers you peace, 'You are not a believer,' seeking the transient goods of worldly life” — the flock.
