حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُعَلَّى الْأَدَمِيُّ، قَالَ: نَا جَابِرُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ: نَا سَلَّامٌ أَبُو الْمُنْذِرِ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي ظِبْيَانَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ - ؓ

أَنَّ جِبْرِيلَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ فِي هَيْئَةِ رَجُلٍ شَاحِبٍ مُسَافِرٍ حَتَّى وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى رُكْبَةِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ: مَا الْإِسْلَامُ ؟ قَالَ: أَنْ تَشْهَدَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ وَإِقَامُ الصَّلَاةِ وَإِيتَاءُ الزَّكَاةِ وَصَوْمُ رَمَضَانَ وَحَجُّ الْبَيْتِ، قَالَ: فَإِذَا فَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ فَقَدْ أَسْلَمْتُ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ قَالَ: صَدَقْتَ قَالَ: فَتَعَجَّبْنَا مِنْ سُؤَالِهِ إِيَّاهُ وَتَصْدِيقِهِ إِيَّاهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ: مَا الْإِحْسَانُ ؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: تَخْشَى اللهَ كَأَنَّكَ تَرَاهُ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ تَرَاهُ فَإِنَّهُ يَرَاكَ، قَالَ: فَإِذَا فَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ فَقَدْ أَحْسَنْتُ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: صَدَقْتَ. قَالَ: فَأَخْبِرْنِي مَا الْإِيمَانُ ؟ قَالَ: الْإِيمَانُ بِاللهِ وَمَلَائِكَتِهِ وَكُتُبِهِ وَرُسُلِهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَالْجَنَّةِ وَالنَّارِ وَالْبَعْثِ بَعْدَ الْمَوْتِ وَالْقَدَرِ خَيْرِهِ وَشَرِّهِ، قَالَ: فَإِذَا فَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ فَقَدْ آمَنْتُ. قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: صَدَقْتَ، قَالَ: فَمَتَى السَّاعَةُ ؟ قَالَ: وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ مَا الْمَسْئُولُ عَنْهَا بِأَعْلَمَ مِنَ السَّائِلِ وَلَكِنْ لَهَا أَشْرَاطٌ إِذَا رَأَيْتَ الْمَرْأَةَ وَلَدَتْ رَبَّتَهَا وَرَأَيْتَ الْحُفَاةَ الْعُرَاةَ الْعَالَةَ يَعْنِي الْعَرَبَ وَلُوا النَّاسَ، قَالَ: صَدَقْتَ ثُمَّ وَلَّى فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: عَلَيَّ بِالرَّجُلِ فَنَظَرَ فَلَمْ يَرَ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: تَدْرُونَ مَنْ هَذَا ؟ قُلْنَا: اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ. قَالَ: هَذَا جِبْرِيلُ جَاءَ لِيُعَلِّمَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ مَا جَاءَ فِي صُورَةٍ قَطُّ إِلَّا عَرَفْتُهُ غَيْرَ هَذِهِ الْمَرَّةِ

✧ Jibril ﷺ came to the Prophet in the form of a pale, traveling man, until he placed his hand upon the Prophet's knee ﷺ and said: 'What is Islam?' He said: 'That you bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establish the prayer, give the zakat, fast Ramadan, and perform the pilgrimage to the House.' He said: 'So if I do that, I have submitted?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'You have spoken the truth.' He said: 'We were amazed at his questioning him and then confirming him.' Then he said: 'What is excellence (ihsan)?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'That you fear Allah as if you see Him, for if you do not see Him, He sees you.' He said: 'So if I do that, I have excelled?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'You have spoken the truth.' He said: 'Then inform me what is faith (iman)?' He said: 'Faith in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, Paradise, Hell, resurrection after death, and destiny, its good and its evil.' He said: 'So if I do that, I have believed.' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'You have spoken the truth.' He said: 'Then when is the Hour?' He said: 'By the One in whose hand is my soul, the one asked about it is not more knowledgeable than the asker, but it has signs: when you see the woman give birth to her mistress, and you see the barefoot, naked, destitute—meaning the Arabs—become leaders of the people.' He said: 'You have spoken the truth.' Then he turned away. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Bring the man back to me.' But they looked and saw nothing. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Do you know who this was?' We said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'This was Jibril, who came to teach you your religion. He never came in any form except that I recognized him, except this time.'
