✧ My family married me to a slave woman of theirs. She gave birth to a black boy like me. Then a Roman slave called Yuhannis had relations with her. She became pregnant and gave birth to another who was like a gecko of the geckos. I said: 'What is this?' She said: 'He belongs to Yuhannis.' I went to Uthman and mentioned that to him. He sent for her and said: 'I judge between you two by the judgment of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ judged that the child belongs to the bed, and for the adulterer is the stone. Alone.' Then she became pregnant and gave birth to a boy like me, two black ones and a red one, and they were attributed to me.

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationAl-Dāraquṭnī was asked about it and said: Mahdī b. Maymūn and Jarīr b. Ḥāzim narrated it from Muḥammad b. ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Yaʿqūb, from al-Ḥasan b. Saʿd, from Rabāḥ, from ʿUthmān. Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāh contradicted them, so he narrated it from al-Ḥasan b. Saʿd, from his father, and he traced the hadith back to ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, from the Prophet ﷺ. The first account is more sound (aṣaḥḥ).
