✧ The Prophet ﷺ used to herd sheep, then he herded camels with a partner of his whom Khadījah's sister had hired the two of them. When they finished the journey, something remained owed to them. His partner kept coming to them to demand payment, and he would say to Muhammad: "Come along," but he would say: "You go, for I am shy." One time she—meaning the partner—came to them and said: "Where is Muhammad? Why doesn't he come with you?" He said: "I told him, and he mentioned that he is shy." So she mentioned that to her sister Khadījah, who said: "I have never seen anyone more shy or more chaste than Muhammad ﷺ." So something fell into the heart of her sister Khadījah, and she sent to him, saying: "Come to my father and propose to him." He said: "Your father is a man of great wealth, and he"—I think he said—"will not do it." She said: "Then go, say a word, for I will suffice you, and come to him when he is drunk." So he did, and he came to him and he married him to her. When morning came, he sat among the people and it was said to him: "You have done well; you married Muhammad." He said: "Did I do that!?" They said: "Yes." So he got up and went in to her and said: "The people say that I married Muhammad, but I did not." She said: "Indeed you did, so do not act foolishly; for Muhammad is such and such." And she kept at him until he was satisfied. Then she sent to Muhammad ﷺ two ounces of silver or gold, and said: "Buy a suit and give it to him as a gift, and such and such." He said, and I think he did it.
